Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome results from a compression of the nerve that feeds the hands and wrist. This nerve, called the median nerve starts in the neck, and passes through the shoulder region, down the arm through the carpal tunnel, a formation in the wrist comprised of tendons and bones, on through to the hands and fingers. It may be first noticed as weakness in hand grip and the symptoms are often worse at night.

What causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

It is important to note that 50% of all Carpal Tunnel Syndrome patients are diagnosed with idiopathic CTS in which there is no known cause of symptoms.

Others may result from trauma related to repetitive movements which require the wrist to be flexed and/or extended for periods of time. This can lead to a structural change within the carpal tunnel, compressing the median nerve. Such movements can result from occupational duties, (data processing, factory work, lifting) or overexertion from sports activities, (bowling, tennis, racquetball).

Systemic diseases have also been determined to cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Menopause, osteoarthritis, late trimester pregnancy, or diabetes can all be contributing factors. It is interesting to note that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is two to five times more common in women than men.

Research has also found that CTS may be related to an injury of the cervical spine.

How can Chiropractic help?

Although Chiropractic is not a cure all for the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, it has been found helpful when structural imbalances result in the symptoms. Chiropractic adjustments of the wrist and neck can relieve the pressure on the median nerve, reducing symptoms in the affected area. And unlike surgery, which leaves permanent changes in the wrist, chiropractic care permits a person to heal naturally. A chiropractor can recommend a program of adjustments, vitamin supplements and exercise which can put you on the road of recovery.
